The Tour of Speyside ran for 10 years from 1987 and was initiated by Colin Horn. It regularly attracted around 60 riders competing in a Tour de France style event with 4 distinct races over a weekend. The race sequence changed over the years but typically included a 50-mile road race, the 8-mile Cairngorm hill climb TT, a 70-mile road race and a 1 hour criterium. Riders could compete individually for the yellow or green jersey, points on sprint stages and also take part in the team competition. Colin’s meticulous organisation and record keeping means that we still have race booklets, manuals and full results for all 10 years of the event. It is reassuring to discover that even back then riders with sticky bottles were being given time penalties for drafting team cars. Nothing really changes!
